Roles: Technical Lead, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Production Support
Working with Lyft and Ammunition, I led the technical implementation of the Glowstache, Lyft’s new car accessory for its drivers. Before the product reached its final form, I prototyped and tested several different concepts to demonstrate feasibility and to inform design decisions. To achieve the perfect combination of form and function, I designed 4 highly cosmetic injection molded plastic parts, 2 PCBs, and a highly tuned light spreader assembly. In addition to engineering, I ensured strict adherence to design intent by being the man-on-the-ground overseas as well as working alongside a domestic contract manufacturer.
While showcasing Lyft's mature yet quirky brand, the Glowstache sits atop a driver's dashboard to show riders that their Lyft ride has arrived. The organic shape of the mustache magically holds securely to its removable silicone base with the force of powerful embedded magnets. Pressing its button causes the front cover to elegantly fade on with even illumination, while subsequent button presses flashes the front cover to indicate the arrival of the driver. When plugged into a micro USB charger, a hidden ring around the button illuminates, indicating charge status.
